Mangesh Tendulkar
Making others laugh is difficult. But pointing the shortcomings while making them laugh is much more difficult. That's what cartoonists do and I respect them for that. There is no derth of cartoonists in India & Maharashtra has its share of notable ones. All of you must be knowing S.D.Phadnis,Vikas Sabnis,Vasant Saravte to some extent Balasaheb Thakare & Raj Thakare too... We have been meeting all of these all these years through various dailies, weeklies, Bi-monthlies,Newspapers..etc.
From Saturday another notable cartoonist held his cartooning exhibition, marking the Landmark of holding 50 Exhibitions of his cartoons. This cartoonist was Mangesh Tendulkar. You would have seen his caroons in the prestigious Dailies likes Times of India or the marathi daily Sakal or even a lot of magazines. Notable among them is Awaz. His first cartoon was published in 1954 by Sakal and the cartoonist is still going on.
I had the honour of visting his exhibition that was held in Balgandharva Gallery from Sat. 28th November to Mon 30th November 2009.The first thing you notice about his cartoon is the subjects he has handled. They range from political, social to simple day to day routine ones. Also one notices the maturity in his cartoons.
They say that there is no language like the pictures. But the Tendulkar's cartoons depict the Grim reality;sometimes playfully sometimes harshly.
He had handled subject's like marriage,Laughter Clubs,Traffic in Pune, injustice against the girl child, and many more.![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhENItT7IschNv8NMBv7mDnwp5Q7wIRmRX-xfVnS5diUkuCk3nNaEc5V6uj1jjXCAPFuj0ohe7Wy8T33rWNDxMi9ANi9Oki5XQTWXU2-qDVeOKnqb3fZ6N-5rfztA1hxYP_NXDHvKXwMp0P/s320/Daat-01.jpg)
I specially loved his "Looking Back" or the UttarRang series. These were his reflections on life as if looking back that was.Reflections on what he thinks is Life,Old age,on the work that he has accompalished. The one Picture I loved the most was his Take on what Life meant for him.Truly Awesome!!!!!!
Then there were other series like "Nakoshi" or "Unwanted" a small series with subjects like Cricket,Airplane etc.
All in all a delightful evening. The Man himself was present there. After seeing the exhibition I ended up buying 2 of his books.Prabhav got it autographed by Mangesh Tendulkar.![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXQRTWNc9olsYZQCgIxWI6xUi1tdgUG5PJJmB9eB82leAoq3Cqus5qEhTU1YUbP0snoZ89kBFFcCe_UDrGN0MGwBipFrkkgMoUj-BtsnDvsp9Ncj7OFEobJlNkhJo4o0d6EO9F-jOsN_rF/s320/moto_0208.jpg)
