Pune Diary:-Badami Sahal....

We are already in to the last week of new year when this post get's published.
I hope all of you must have had a very nice year end.Wishing you all a Happy & Prosperous New Year.
Everybody must have been visiting some places or must have planned trip's for their new year.My year end was spent in Badami in Karnataka, the southern state in India.
Badami or "Vatapi" is an ancient City in Karnataka where the Chalukya's or rather the Chalukyan dynasty ruled from 6th to 12th century A.D.This is the city to the enorth of Karnataka and at a 12 hr. drive from Pune(Maharashtra). The city is the host of many 6th-12th century temples built during the chalukyan era. There are also many carved caves that were carved during the Chalukyan rule.
The name Vatapi has a story behind it.The story goes as follows:-
"The name Vatapi has origin in the Vatapi legend of Ramayana relating to Sage Agastya. There were two demon siblings Vatapi and Ilvala. They used to kill all mendicants by tricking them in a queer way. The elder Ilvala would turn Vatapi into a ram and would offer its flesh to the guest. As soon as the person ate the flesh , Ilvala would call out the name of Vatapi, as he had a boon that whomsoever Ilvala calls would return from even the netherland, and Vatapi would emerge ripping through the body of the person, thus killing him.. Their tricks worked until Sage Agastya counter tricked them by digesting Vatapi before Ilvala could call for him and thus ended the life of Vatapi in the hands of Ilvala. Two of the hills in Badami represent the demons Vatapi and Ilvala."
While Badami is the name due to the soil colour which is "badami" in colour i.e whitish yellow.
These cave temples are the rock cut cave temples. There are in all four caves. The 1st cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The second and third cave temples are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The cave walls have sculptures of all the Vishnu avtaars.Notable among that is the sculpture of Vishnu in full standing pose.Lord vishnu is usually depicted as sheshshahi(i.e.sleeping on shesh naag)so this statue is special for the vaishanvites.

Also there is a block of never ending swastika.... wherein u can't figure out the start and the end of the swastika.

The 4th cave is dedicated to the jainism sect. The stautes of various jain thirthankars are sculpted in the cave.Notably among them is the Vrisabh,Mahavira etc.
Its is said that all the historical momuments depict the religious and plotical scenarios of the kingdom & the kings rule, during whose reign the momument is built.
It is true to some extent in case of badami because the during the reign of chalukyan kings Vaishnavas, the Smarthas and the Jainism were the principal sects or religions. They were a major influence in the politics of those times. So all you see the temples dedicated to these sects.
It was all in all a hectic and fun Trip.We had cover Kalloli,Banshankari & Badami in 3days. It was nice to spend the year end away with mama's & cousins for company.
Well I hope for such a trip once again.
Signing off for Now ~MaddyJ
